Few things compare to eating a sweet watermelon on a warm summer day. This summertime staple is a favorite amongst kids and adults alike, with several watermelon-flavored treats dominating store shelves as well. Now, add a watermelon-themed craft to your kitchen to add some of those glorious summertime vibes to your kitchen. Follow along to create this simple and adorable craft! 

Supplies

Purchase your magnets by visiting our online store. All magnets necessary to complete this project are linked in the full supply list below. You’ll need these supplies: 

 

  • Adhesive magnets (¼ x 1/16) 
  • Red and green construction paper
  • Black paint
  • Bowl for paint
  • Scissors
  • Glue 
  • Paintbrush 
  • Paper towels to clean any messes

Steps

This is a great art project for children of all ages. Use your judgment when it comes to letting your children use scissors or magnets. 

 

*As always, adult supervision is required for this project.*

 

Follow these instructions:

 

  1. Gather all materials.
  2. Cut out a half oval-shaped piece of your green and red construction paper. The red oval should be a little smaller than the green one.
  3. Line up the straight portions of each cutout and glue the red one on top of the green piece. Part of the green piece’s curve should be showing to resemble the outer part of the watermelon. Let it dry.
  4. Put some black paint in a bowl.
  5. Dip your brush and paint some black spots on the red paper to resemble watermelon seeds. 
  6. Let everything dry.
  7. Place an adhesive magnet on the back of your watermelon. Larger slices may require multiple magnets. Hang up your watermelon slices on your fridge, whiteboard, or magnetic chalkboard for a fun and seasonal piece of decor!
