Everyone could benefit from a little extra magic in their lives! With a magnetic pencil holder, you can have just that. Whether you’re sprucing up your home office or a fun-loving classroom, a magnetic pencil holder captures a tiny bit of wonder—and makes you excited to be productive.

Better yet, you can create your own “magical” pencil holder in only a few minutes, often with materials you already have lying around.

Here are a couple of different ways you can create your own magnetic pencil holders (including one way that seems truly extraordinary).

How to Create Your Own Magnetic Pencil Holder: Version 1

This version feels truly supernatural. It keeps your pencil suspended in the air and prevents it from falling down, seemingly defying the laws of gravity.

Of course, this special homemade device simply follows the physics of magnets, but it’s still an impressive visual trick—and it’s bound to impress your guests or classmates!

Supplies

For this magnetic pencil holder, you’ll need:

  • 2 Ring Magnets
  • Pencil
  • Hot Glue Gun
  • A Dowel Rod (It should be about ½” longer than the pencil)
  • A Popsicle Stick
  • A Flat, Stable Surface

How to Create It

Here are the steps to follow:

  1. Apply hot glue to one end of the dowel rod.
  2. Stand the dowel rod on your stable surface, using the glue to help the rod stand in place.
  3. Once the glue dries, apply glue to the top of the dowel rod.
  4. Place the popsicle stick on top of the dowel rod.
  5. Hot glue the ring magnet to the eraser-end of the pencil.
  6. Place the other magnet on one end of the popsicle stick.

Next, stand your pencil underneath the magnet on top of the popsicle stick, keeping the tip of the pencil against the stable surface underneath. If the magnet on top of the popsicle falls, it means the two magnets are repelling each other. If that’s the case, flip the magnet on top of the popsicle stick.

Once the two magnets attract each other, glue the second magnet to the top of the popsicle stick.

Now, when you place the pencil under the magnet on the popsicle stick, it’ll stand upright.

Why It Works

This “magical” pencil stand obviously isn’t truly magical—it’s simply taking advantage of physics. The magnet on top of the popsicle attracts the magnet on top of the pencil.

However, the magnets aren’t strong enough to overcome the full weight of the pencil. Instead, the magnets are just strong enough to keep the pencil from falling over.

How to Create Your Own Magnetic Pencil Holder: Version 2

This simple pencil holder can be assembled even faster, and it’s perfect for rooms or workspaces with flat metal surfaces, such as a refrigerator, white board, or filing cabinets.

Supplies

For this magnetic pencil holder, you’ll need:

How to Create It

Here are the steps to follow:

  1. Apply hot glue to one side of the pencil, closer to the eraser. You’ll want to leave enough room at the bottom of the pencil for you to hold it comfortably while you write.
  2. Press the magnet into the hot glue.
  3. Allow the glue to dry, then check that the pencil “attaches” to flat metal surfaces. If so, you now have a handy pencil holder that’s completely powered by a single magnet.
