As you know, you can use magnets to decorate your home in many unique ways. You can also use the power of magnetism to make an already existing piece of art a more functional item in your home. If you’re looking for a creative way to hang notes, art, or display CDs, a poster magnet board is a great way to do it. This fun, interactive piece of art is perfect to hang in a game room, a music room, or even at the office to organize in a decorative fashion. Follow the steps below to create your own!

Materials & Tools

  • Poster frame with an acrylic face (24 x 36 in.)
  • 1 cool poster/picture you’d like to use as the background image (24 x 36 in.)
  • 1 flat sheet of galvanized tin (24 x 36 in., 24 - 30 gauge )
  • Neodymium magnets (between 1 - 2 lbs pull force)
  • 1 roll of masking tape (1" wide)
  • Leather work gloves
  • Hot or white glue
  • Frame with acrylic face, with rigid backing

Directions

Step 1: Remove Backing Take the backing off of the frame. Set it on a work surface with the hanger side down. Step 2: Prepare and Attach Tin The easiest way to begin this project is with a sheet of galvanized tin that is exactly 24 x 36 inches, but if it’s not, be sure to cut the tin with tin snips. Learn to cut tin with this helpful how-to. Next, wearing your gloves, you’ll need to attach the tin to the backing. This will hold it in place and protect your poster. Place the tin in the center of the backing. Then, you’ll be using the masking tape. It’s helpful to have strips laid out or to have an assistant rip the tape for you, because you will be wearing gloves. First, starting with one of the long sides, use a 6-8 inch piece and overlap it evenly on the tin and backing. Continue down the side, overlapping pieces as you go. Make sure the tin is completely flat by applying light pressure on the tin and running your gloved hand across it. Next, tape the opposite side, just like you taped the first. Then finally, tape the last two sides. Always be sure the tin stays flat. Step 3: Reinforce Hanger Flip the backing over and inspect the hanger. Because the tin will add weight to the frame, a flimsy hanger may not hold it up all that well. Apply hot or white glue around the hanger’s base to secure in place, then be sure to let it dry thoroughly. Step 4: Prepare the Frame Now it’s time to get the poster into the frame. Remove any paper or plastic inserts from the frame. Place your poster inside and then carefully put the backing over top of it to reassemble the frame. Bend the tabs on the back to secure the poster and backing. Then simply hang the frame on the perfect spot on your wall. You can use those neodymium magnets to hang anything you’d like on the frame.
