Permanent Magnets: Titans of Industry & Here to Stay
Imagine this: You’re witnessing a surgery, an incredible experience in its own right; however, what makes this particular surgery so amazing is the device being used. It appears to be levitating inside and above the person’s body! In reality, this grasping device is being maneuvered remotely by a robotic arm using a permanent magnet. Dr. Matthew Kroh of the Cleveland Clinic says, “It allows us to do a very common operation in a less invasive way.” But according to many, this is just the beginning.
An Established Technology the Remains Relevant
Permanent magnets are seemingly miraculous in many ways — an established technology that is more relevant than ever for things like EV motors and wind turbines. Research teams and companies are spending a lot of money in an effort to make them more powerful and efficient.
Currently, China dominates the global permanent magnet market (with over 90% market share) seeing as they have access to rare earth materials and mining. In the States, the argument and desire is for cleaner and more widely distributed magnet manufacturing facilities. But it's a challenging industry to compete in — and that’s putting it lightly.
One US firm, Niron Magnetics, claims to be able to make good magnets using iron and nitrogen vs. rare earths, generating magnetic fields via the specific crystalline structure of the iron nitride. The firm’s Chief Executive, Jonathan Rowntree says Niron has produced these working magnets and will aim to kick-off their use in speakers.
Magnet Recycling
Magnet recycling is also an avenue toward making new rare earth magnets. By extracting rare earth alloys from things like electric motors and hard drives, some companies claim that they may be able to start magnet production this year. Hypothetically, this all becomes easier as a generation of EV motors and wind turbines reach the end of their lifespans.
In the meantime, companies are taking the opportunity to refine their ideas and perfect their processes. When it comes to the ascending usefulness of permanent magnets and the possibility of bringing more production to the United States, only time will tell.
