Over the past year, we have examined the growing number of rare earth plants popping up across the globe. From Europe to the continental United States, industry experts are investing in a more economically sound future and a lesser dependence on China. Now, a new facility may be opening in India to help its rare earth push. 

Exciting Possibilities

The plans were formally announced on October 15th by an Indian engineering and procurement firm called Trafalgar during an event at the International Rare Earths Conference in Washington. The facility would be India’s first rare earth metal, alloy, and magnet plant.

The location can help with countless consumer products in the region, including electric cars and other crucial appliances. While the idea is in its infancy, there is a great amount of support from the local government. A state-owned rare earth producer called Irel even committed to supplying separated rare earth oxides in hopes of assisting with the supply chain. Their pledge would also be a huge help for automotive, samarium cobalt, and defense needs. 

Trafalgar has already acquired a 45,000-square-meter site in the province of Gujarat and funded the first steps of the project. Currently, the facility will be completed in 2026 if additional funding and similar factors fall into place as anticipated.

“There are many good reasons to set up a project in India — a large domestic market, highly skilled workforce and a fast-growing manufacturing sector,” said Trafalgar Founder and Director Ian Higgins.

The company expects production capacity to be around 100 tons per year.
