Researchers are now developing tiny magnetic microrobots capable of traveling through the bloodstream to deliver medicine directly to targeted areas of the body. According to a recent report from Magnetics Magazine, these microscopic robots are guided using external magnetic fields and could someday help doctors treat conditions with greater accuracy and fewer side effects.

The microrobots, developed by researchers at ETH Zurich, are roughly the size of a grain of sand and contain magnetic nanoparticles that allow doctors to steer them through blood vessels. Once they reach a target area, such as a tumor or blood clot, the robots can release medication directly where it is needed.

The robots can even move against blood flow using carefully controlled electromagnetic fields. Researchers compare the navigation process to operating a video game controller, guiding the tiny devices through the body in real time.
